Development projects essentially requires large chunk of land which displaces the people. Displacement due to development projects gives rise to severe social, economical, cultural and environmental problems. Family crumbles down and its bond by long established heritage and ancestry are scattered.
The land outsees pay a great price for development. People are relocated to a new place where their productive skills may be less applicable and their production system gets dismantled. Productive assets and income sources are lost. Persons who are uprooted and rehabilitated in another place have to undergo the entire process of re-socialization and adjustment in an unfamiliar environment. Traditional social relations and community networks break down leading to physical and psychological stress. It also leads to economic disruption, often resulting in impoverishment and insecurity. Inadequate and unplanned resettlement, with little or no share in the benefits from the projects further increases the misery of those affected.
Dr. Ankur Pare in his book “Sociological Study of the Displaced Families” has interpreted applied research regarding displacement and its impact on the displaced families.
